Ford Fusion Named 2013 ‘Green Car of the Year’

The Ford Fusion was awarded the title of ‘Green Car of the Year’ by Green Car Journal today at the Los Angeles Auto Show. I sense that you’re surprised. “The Ford Fusion? … an American midsize sedan?” That’s right. Considering that previous winners include the Chevy Volt (a plug-in hybrid) and Honda Civic CNG (a natural gas-powered compact car), you’re probably not the only person left scratching their head. So what was it that made Ford’s new midsize sedan stand above other notable contenders (such as the all-electric Nissan LEAF)?

New Mitsubishi i Tops Green List

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) released its Greenest Vehicles of 2012 list, and the all-new Mitsubishi i (previously and sometimes still called the i-Miev) bumped the Honda Civic Natural Gas from its comfortable place at the top. The i is the first electric car of the new EV era to be recognized as the list topper.

After eight years of reign, the Honda Civic NG is no longer king. The 2012 Mitsubishi i is awarded the ACEEE’s highest score (58) based on its performance in fuel efficiency, tailpipe emissions, emissions from the fuel and vehicle manufacturing processes, and other environmental factors. The i is the first electric vehicle to win the top spot since the GM EV-1 was recognized 12 years ago.

The 2012 Honda Civic Natural Gas may not be as well-known or advertised as the Leaf or Volt, but it is the green car of the year.

To be fair, neither the Chevy Volt or Nissan Leaf was up for this year’s award. They competed last year, and the Chevy Volt took home the honor. However, the Civic NG did beat out some higher profile competitors including the Ford Focus Electric and Toyota Prius V.

Natural Gas Civic Named Green Car Journal’s Car of the Year

Green Car Journal‘s choice for this year’s “Car of the Year” isn’t the Chevy Volt or Nissan Leaf. It’s not the Mitsubishi i, Toyota Prius, Honda Fit EV or Ford’s new Focus Electric either.

According to editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and editor of GreenCar.com, Ron Cogan, “There is no other vehicle like the Civic Natural Gas on American highways, and this recognition has been a long time coming for Honda… The Honda Civic Natural Gas is a prime example of an alternative fuel that is viable, efficient and practical, making it worthy of the 2012 Green Car of the Year award,” said Cogan.
