City of Indianapolis Decides to Go Hybrid

2013 Toyota Prius Gets Pricing and Special Edition

Once a leader without equal, the Toyota Prius is facing more and more competition from other hybrids and electrics, which have passed it by in terms of fuel economy. For the 2013 model year, Toyota is hoping to sway at least a few buyers with what it calls the Persona Series Special Edition.

The Persona Series is based on the Prius Three trim level. Its mechanicals remain the same as the stock Prius, but it enjoys a series of interior and exterior upgrades.

Cadillac Will Begin Production on ELR Hybrid Next Year

GM announced plans to develop the Cadillac ELR, essentially an upgraded luxury version of the Chevy Volt, last summer. This week, it provided an update, stating that it is investing $35 million into its Detroit-Hamtramck plant for ELR production to begin in late 2013.

The Detroit-Hamtramck plant is already GM’s base camp for electric-based vehicles like the Chevy Volt and Opel Ampera, so it’s not surprising that it is being prepped for the ELR.

Last generation parallel hybrids may be somewhat passé in terms of green technology and brow-raising fuel economy numbers, but they still offer some of the best efficiency at the lowest prices. Take the 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid, which began rolling into dealers this week. The car gets a combined 41 mpg and starts under $26,000.
